Moving from Squarespace to Shopify

Squarespace is a fine place to start selling, but growing shops often outgrow it. Here is when a move to Shopify makes sense, what it involves, and how to do it without losing your search rankings.

Squarespace is a good place to begin selling. It is simple, it looks tidy, and it lets a small shop get going without much fuss. But as an online business grows, many owners hit the same wall, and start wondering whether it is time to move to a platform built first and foremost for ecommerce. Shopify is usually the destination, and the question is when, and how.

The signs you have outgrown Squarespace are fairly consistent. You are fighting the platform to do things a serious shop needs: richer product options, better inventory handling, more capable discounts, a wider choice of apps and payment methods, or the kind of checkout control that lifts conversion. When the tool starts limiting the business rather than serving it, the move is worth considering.

Shopify's case is that it does one thing and does it deeply. It is built around selling, so the checkout is strong, the ecosystem of apps is vast, it handles scale and traffic spikes without drama, and it takes the burden of security and payments largely off your plate. For a shop that intends to grow, that focus tends to pay off.

It is not a free lunch. Shopify has its own monthly cost and, depending on your setup, transaction and app fees, and some things are done the Shopify way rather than yours. For a very small or occasional shop, Squarespace may still be the more sensible home. The move makes sense when the growth justifies the greater capability.

Proper redirects are what protect the traffic, and skipping them is the most expensive mistake in a migration.

The migration itself is a real project, not a button. Products, images, customers and orders need to move across cleanly, the design needs rebuilding in Shopify rather than copied, and everything needs testing before launch. Done carelessly it is painful. Done properly it is smooth, and the shop that emerges is better for it.

The part that catches people out is search. Your existing Squarespace pages have addresses that Google knows. If those addresses change in the move and nothing tells search engines where each page has gone, you can lose hard-won rankings overnight. Proper redirects from every old address to its new home are what protect the traffic, and skipping them is the most expensive mistake in a migration.

So the honest summary is this: moving to Shopify is often the right call for a growing shop, but it is worth doing deliberately, with the data migration and the redirects handled carefully, rather than rushed. The upside is a platform that will not hold you back for a long time.

If you are weighing up a move and worried about the disruption or the rankings, that is exactly the part worth planning properly. Tell us where your shop is now and we will map out what a clean move would involve.
