The time it takes to hit something depends on its size and distance. One of the most reliable findings in design, and one of the most ignored.

In 1954 Paul Fitts measured something so ordinary that it is easy to miss its importance. The time it takes to reach a target depends on how far away it is and how large it is. Big and close is fast. Small and distant is slow, and prone to error. Seventy years later it remains one of the most reliable predictions in the study of how people use things, and one of the most casually ignored.

It applies wherever a person points, taps, or clicks, which is to say almost everywhere. A generous button under the thumb is hit without thought. A tiny close icon in a far corner is a small daily tax on everyone who reaches for it. The law does not care how elegant the layout looks in a static mockup. It describes what the hand and eye will actually have to do, thousands of times, long after the design has been signed off.

The practical version is close to common sense, once stated. Make the actions that matter large, and put them within easy reach. On a phone that means the lower half of the screen, where the thumb naturally falls, not the top corner it has to stretch for. On a desktop it means near where the cursor already is, rather than a considered journey away. Give small controls room to breathe, so a near miss does not trigger the wrong thing.

That last point is worth dwelling on, because it is free performance most products leave on the table. A control pinned to an edge is easy to hit at speed, since the pointer simply stops there and cannot overshoot. The corners are better still. This is why the best menu bars and docks sit hard against the boundary of the screen, and why a button floating a few pixels away from an edge is measurably harder to use than one pressed right up against it.

None of this is noticed when it is right, which is precisely the problem with arguing for it. A forgiving interface feels quick and calm, and nobody can tell you why, so the work of making it so is easy to cut in favour of something that photographs better. The cost of getting it wrong is just as invisible. A slightly higher error rate, a little more hesitation, a few more people who abandon a task they would have finished on a kinder layout.

The law is not retreating as inputs change. It is spreading. Touch made target size a matter of physical fingertips rather than precise pixels. Voice and gesture add their own version of the same trade, where the effort of reaching a function is measured in words spoken or movements made rather than distance travelled. Even as we begin to talk to our software, the question underneath Fitts holds. How much effort does it take to get to the thing I want, and can that effort be made smaller.

For interfaces that mix pointing with conversation, this becomes a live design decision rather than a solved one. The command a person uses most should be the one closest to hand, whether that means a large button, a default action, or a phrase the system understands without ceremony. Frequency should buy proximity. The things done often should be the things reached most easily, and the law that has governed the mouse for seventy years is a good guide to arranging the interfaces that will replace it.

The mobile era made this law less academic and more expensive, because a thumb is a blunt instrument next to a cursor. A link sized for a mouse becomes a coin toss on a phone, and the person who mis-taps a cramped menu does not file a complaint; they simply feel the site is fiddly and trust it a little less. Multiply that faint irritation across every visit and it becomes a real drag on a business, invisible in any single session and unmistakable in the totals.

Fitts's Law is not a flourish to add at the end. It is a constraint to design within from the start, as real as the size of a thumb or the reach of an arm. Respect it and the interface feels quick and forgiving, and no one will know why. Ignore it and the product will feel very slightly wrong, in a way that costs you customers who could never quite say what put them off.

This is the sort of thing experience notices and haste does not. A layout can look finished and photograph beautifully while quietly punishing the hand that has to use it, and the only reliable defence is someone who has watched enough real people miss enough real buttons to feel the cost before it is paid. That instinct cannot be generated. It is earned, and it is a large part of what you are actually buying when you bring in people who have done the work for years.
