What to expect when you hire a design studio · Article banner

If you have never commissioned brand or web design before, here is how a good project actually runs, start to finish.

If you have never commissioned design before, hiring a studio can feel opaque, and it should not. Here is how a good project actually runs, so you know what to expect and what a good partner looks like at each step.

It starts with questions, not designs. The first phase is discovery: understanding your business, your customers and your goals. A studio that starts pushing pixels before it understands you is guessing, however nice the pixels are.

Strategy comes before screens. Good work is built on a clear direction, positioning, audience and what only you can say, before a single page is drawn. This is the part that makes the eventual design feel inevitable rather than arbitrary, and it is the part cheap work skips.

The design happens in the open. You should see the work as it develops, in stages, with room to react and steer. Surprises at the end are a sign of a poor process. Expect to be shown directions and to shape them, not handed a finished thing to rubber-stamp.

Your feedback genuinely shapes it. A good studio wants your input early and often, and knows how to turn it into better work rather than simply doing as it is told. The best results come from a real collaboration, not a handover.

A studio that starts designing before it understands your business is guessing. Expect questions first.

Then it is built and launched. Once the design is right, it is built properly, tested, and launched, with performance, accessibility and search handled as fundamentals rather than afterthoughts. A beautiful design that is badly built helps no one.

The best relationships do not end at launch. They continue, with support, content and ongoing improvement, because a brand and a website are things to tend rather than finish and forget.

Above all, a good partner feels a certain way: senior people who do the work, honesty about what is worth doing and what is not, clear communication, and a genuine interest in your business succeeding.

If that sounds like the kind of partner you want, we would like to hear what you are building. Tell us where you are headed and we will show you how we would get you there.
