Signs your website needs a redesign

A website has a shelf life. Here are the honest signs yours has reached the end of it, and when a few fixes will do instead.
A website is not forever. Design dates, businesses change, and technology moves on. The tricky part is knowing when a redesign is genuinely due, rather than redesigning out of boredom or clinging on far too long. Here are the honest signs.
The first is that it simply looks dated. If your site looks noticeably older than your competitors', visitors quietly assume the business is too. Fair or not, design is a proxy for competence, and people judge in seconds.
The second is that it no longer matches the business. You have grown, changed what you offer, or moved upmarket, and the site still reflects the company you used to be. A gap between how good you are and how you look costs you at exactly the wrong moment.
The third is mobile. If the site is fiddly, slow or broken on a phone, that is most of your visitors having a poor experience, and search engines marking you down for it at the same time.
The fourth is speed. Fast is something customers feel and search engines reward. A site that takes several seconds to load is losing people before it has even appeared, and no amount of good design further down the page makes up for it.
Design is a proxy for competence. If your site looks dated, visitors quietly assume the business is too.
The fifth is that you cannot update it yourself. If changing a single word means calling a developer, the site has become a liability, and it will quietly rot because nobody wants to touch it.
The sixth, and the clearest of all, is that it does not convert. Traffic without enquiries or sales is the plainest sign the site is not doing its job, and a redesign that fixes the structure and the conversion path will pay for itself.
One caveat is worth stating. Not every problem needs a full redesign. Sometimes a focused review and a few sharp fixes do more, faster, than starting again. Diagnose before you demolish.
If several of these ring true, it is worth a proper look. Tell us the address and we will tell you honestly whether you need a redesign or just a few well-chosen fixes.
